AFS Canopy Warning

AFS Canopy Warning

AFS Canopy Warning

Product catalog summary
Overview: This document provides instructions for installing and configuring a canopy warning system for the RV-14 aircraft, applicable to other RV models as well. The system alerts pilots if the canopy is not properly latched above 1500 RPM through both audible and visual warnings on the EFIS screen.
Specifications: A switch is installed in the canopy latch system, which is normally open when the canopy is open. When closed and latched, the switch connects to the ground. The system is integrated with the EFIS to provide warnings.
Installation Procedure:
  • Step 1: Install the WH-00126 Left Dash Mount Harness from the RV-14 Canopy Wiring Harness Kit.
  • Step 2: Connect a wire from the C414J 12 position Molex connector to "Input 1" on the PFD EFIS main connector. Ensure the wire is connected to the pilot's primary flight display.
  • Step 3: Enter calibrate mode, configure Input 1 for "CANOPY" usage, "Norm Closed" logic, and "ABOVE 1500 RPM" audio. Save settings and reboot EFIS.
  • Step 4: Test the system by unlatching the canopy at idle, increasing RPM above 1500, and checking for warnings. Ensure no warnings occur when the canopy is latched and RPM is above 1500.
Testing and Adjustment: Verify that parts C-01453 and C-01454 are installed. Test the system in-flight up to Vne to ensure no false warnings due to aerodynamic pressure. Adjust the switch as necessary.
Recommendations: The canopy warning system should not replace visual inspections of the canopy latch. Adjustments may be needed to prevent false warnings during flight, which should be noted in checklists.
Caution: The canopy warning system is not a substitute for visual checks. Ensure the canopy latch handle is fully closed when the canopy switch engages.

A switch may be installed in the canopy latch system that is normally open when the canopy is open. When the canopy is closed and latched the switch should make a connection to ground. See the example circuit in Figure 1. The canopy warning .gca file enables the switch installed on RV-14 Page 38-32 to report through the EFIS when the canopy is not closed and latched. Above 1500 rpm if the canopy latch is is open (see caution statement below) both an audible warning and visual warning on the EFIS screen will be given. Step 1: Install the WH-00126 Left Dash Mount Harness provided in the RV-14 Canopy Wiring Harness Kit. Step 2: Install a wire from the C414J 12 position Molex connector (that connects the canopy harness to the airframe harness) to “Input 1” on the PFD EFIS main connector. Note that warnings from the input pins are not shared between screens and therefore the wire must be connected to the Pilots primary flight display. The following pertains to RV-14 canopy latch systems. As mentioned above, the in flight the canopy switch may become disengaged and cause a false canopy warning. Final canopy switch adjustment to prevent disengagement of the...
