VOIP GATEWAYS - 1

The extremely flexible architecture of SITTI M800IP® MULTIFONO® Voice Communication System (VCS) opens a wide range of communication applications for ATM (Air Traffic Management). Among these, the possibility of multiple connections to remote devices based on EUROCAE ED137 VOIP (Voice Over IP) standard is particularly interesting. In fact, when radios are installed at a remote site, it is of utmost importance to access them from different VCS systems (resource sharing), because this immediately reflects in cost savings for the Customer and more efficient and effective communications. Additionally, different telephone networks can be interfaced to the VCS, thus allowing non-VOIP calls to be interconnected to VOIP ones and vice versa. Standard-compliant remote VOIP radios and telephone lines can be directly interfaced to M800IP®, but the overall scenario may be complicated by the fact that remote radios and telephone lines may be old fashioned or from different vendors, and they may not have any standard-compliant IP interface. Another situation is when the VCS is TDM based while ED137 radios are to be used by operators. The solution is SITTI GVS: • Remote radios of any kind can be connected to a standard IP network by means of SITTI GVS-R gateway devices that take care of all required settings and possible legacy protocols towards the radio themselves and convert data and audio signals into EUROCAE ED137 standard VOIP (and vice versa). • Telephone networks (FXS, FXO, 4 wires E/M, MFC, E1, ISDN, etc) can also be connected to SITTI GVS-T gateway devices, thus allowing VOIP and non-VOIP networks to co-exist. • Radio and Telephone GVS interfaces can be housed in the same physical drawer, thus integrating radio and telephone functions and reducing costs GVS-RT. GVS devices can be seen as simplified versions of the full MULTIFONO® M800IP® system, where specially designed boards act as gateways between local resources on one side and the standard ED137 network on the other side. Thanks to their modularity, GVS devices can be customized to cope with small radio sites up to large radio installation sites with tens of co-located radios through a number of possible interfaces (4 wires standard E&M analogue, E1, Nx64, QSIG digital). The same applies on the telephone side, where multiple co-existing connections to different telephone networks are provided as a standard option. The interface to the IP WAN network is duplicated for reliability reasons. As foreseen by the EUROCAE ED137 standard, GVS devices can be simultaneously accessed by a number of VCS systems, thus guaranteeing access by several operators at different sites at the same time. Satellite connections are also envisaged.

VOIP GATEWAYS - 2

Integrated Systems for Air Traffic Control and Control Room Management GVS devices include facilities to automatically look for other radios with the same characteristics in case of failure of the one being used; this automatic search procedure allows VCS operators to continue their work without suffering of service disruption even in case of total radio failure. Best Signal Selection (BSS) and audio compression are standard features provided by GVS devices. Configuration and maintenance are achieved via standard SNMP management systems via SITTI MULTIFONO Management System (MMS) software...
