SOLEX Metrology - case study n°4 Solution for checking band thickness on a continuous production line Introduction Continuous production line monitoring machines are the natural extension of the Solex group of dimensional measuring devices. Combining a set of dimensional sensors, automated systems and data recording and processing allows for the provision of a rapid inspection system that fulfils the needs of mass production. Our solutions are designed on a case-by-case basis working from the specifications set by our clients. Problem areas A pharmaceutical industry sub-contractor has called on SOLEX Metrology know-how to design a machine to measure continuously - contactlessly, on a production line - the thickness of an elastomer band. These elastomer bands are destined for the manufacture of seals. Key elements Our long experience in the development of contactless dimensional measuring sensors, combined with our automated system and data processing know-how were used to advantage in this project. Furthermore, the configuration of our R&D service for the management of specific projects for observing precise specifications helped bring about this development. The pneumatic dimensional measuring principle system used here means that there is no contact with the surface to be checked; thus the surface can be fragile or moving without encountering measuring problems. This procedure does not have the same constraints as optical measuring systems that depend on the colour or brightness of the subject sample. The tracer sensor technique is based on a mobile sensor that measures and adjusts its distance from the band surface, and the use of an LVDT sensor to measure the displacement of the moving sensor. In the present case, this technique allows any elastomer band thickness variation to be determined at any...
