The Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) system is a visual aid for pilots during final approach, consisting of four units aligned perpendicular to the runway. These units emit a combination of red and white lights, indicating the pilot's vertical position relative to the glideslope. The system can be adjusted for different glideslope angles and allows pilots to follow the glideslope to within 300 meters of touchdown.
Research Engineers have developed a highly efficient single lens optical system for PAPI projectors, featuring a purpose-made parabolic reflector. This design minimizes internal components, enhances optical efficiency, and reduces maintenance needs. The projectors use advanced dichroic filters for clear signal transmission and maintain performance even if one lamp fails.
The PAPI system's modular design allows for interchangeable projectors, simplifying maintenance and reducing downtime. Projectors are mounted on a rigid aluminum casting with integral clinometer reference pads, ensuring stable optical reference without the need for realignment during maintenance.
The PAPI units feature a three-leg support system for easy positioning and minimal stress, reducing the risk of signal distortion and fatigue failure. The system includes frangible feet, support legs, a leveling assembly, lamp leads, and a comprehensive installation manual. Major overhauls are recommended to be conducted in workshops for higher service quality.
A precision clinometer, designed by Research Engineers, is available for accurate setup. It operates over a broad temperature range and is FAA approved, requiring no electrical supply.
The PAPI system complies with ICAO, FAA, and CAP168 requirements. Various projector and lamp configurations are available, with standard lamps being Pk30d, 200 W. Shipping dimensions and weights for different units are provided.

The PAPI (Precision Approach Path Indicator) system is a simple and efficient, positive visual aid to the pilot on final approach. The PAPI system consists of a line of four units at 90˚ to the runway centre line which are typically spaced at 9 metres apart. Units are identical, producing a beam of light with the upper portion white and the lower red. A pilot sees the four individual lights in a combination of red and white, depending on his vertical position. Clinometer A precision Clinometer has been specifically designed by Research Engineers. It has a longitudinal spirit level with a micrometer type screw calibrated in degrees and minutes. Overall accuracy is better than one minute of arc. The Clinometer has a broad temperature operating range (-50˚C to +70˚C), being constructed in aluminium and stainless steel, and is FAA approved.
