Luke Skerman, an Australian farmer, sought to optimize fertilizer use on his chickpea crops following a drought. He required a fast and safe method to analyze fertilizer impact due to the large size of his fields, ranging from 50 to 100 hectares.
Challenges
Farmers face difficulties in quickly assessing crop health and obtaining smart soil data. Traditional methods like satellite images are often low quality and slow in data analysis.
Solution: Parrot Disco-Pro AG
Luke adopted the Parrot Disco-Pro AG drone solution to test different fertilizers. This method allowed him to efficiently analyze the effectiveness of fertilizers using NDVI maps, which provided quick insights into the best fertilizer combinations.
Implementation
On 29th September 2017, Luke conducted an autonomous drone flight over a 77-hectare field. The drone, equipped with Parrot Sequoia sensors, captured multispectral images to create NDVI maps, enabling precise analysis of crop health.
Results
The NDVI maps revealed that fertilizers used in zones 3 and 4 were more effective than those in zones 1 and 5. Consequently, Luke decided to continue using fertilizers A, B, and C for future crops.
Conclusion
The Parrot Disco-Pro AG solution proved to be a simple and efficient tool for obtaining reliable data, improving field productivity, and saving costs. Luke highlighted the benefit of processing data on his own computer using Pix4Dag software.
