IR/UV Line Scanner

IR/UV Line Scanner

Product catalog summary
Application
  • Detection of highly reflective features on the sea surface, such as oil spills and biogenic surface films.
  • High-resolution mapping of very thin and thick oil layers on the water surface.
  • Basic sensor for automatic creation of thematic maps of oil spill scenes through automated scene analysis.
  • Imaging remote sensor for thermal mapping applications.
Technology Overview

The IR/UV Line Scanner is a standard tool in airborne oil spill remote sensing, capable of mapping oil spills with varying layer thicknesses. Developed by OPTIMARE, it is ruggedized, lightweight, and modular, featuring a unique optical design and broad operating temperature range.

Product Specifications
  • Mechanical Properties: Dimensions of the IR/UV Scan Head are 351.5 mm x 290 mm x 305 mm, and the Control Unit is 485 mm x 420 mm x 338 mm. The mass is 12.3 kg for the Scan Head and 17.9 kg for the Control Unit.
  • Optical Detectors: Includes a closed-cycle sterling-cooled thermal infrared detector (HgCdTe) and a diode-based ultraviolet detector with two channels. Spectral sensitivity ranges from 8 µm to 12 µm (thermal infrared) and 280 nm to 380 nm (near ultraviolet).
  • Scanning Systems: Utilizes across-track scanning with a scan rate of 100 Hz and a line rate of 20 Hz. The field of view is 90 degrees, typically operating at an altitude of 1,000 ft.
  • Power Supply: Operates at 19 A @ 28 VDC, with a voltage range of 20 VDC to 32 VDC.
  • Communication/Interface: Supports copper or fiber-optic ethernet connections.
  • Operating/Storage Conditions: Ground survival temperature ranges from -55 °C to +85 °C for the Scan Head and -55 °C to +60 °C for the Control Unit. Operating temperatures are -40 °C to +70 °C for the Scan Head and -40 °C to +55 °C for the Control Unit. Altitude/pressure specifications are 41,000 ft for storage and 15,000 ft for operation.
  • Vibration and Humidity: Complies with RTCA/DO-160G and RTCA/DO-160C standards for vibration and humidity.
Standards
  • Environmental qualification in accordance with RTCA/DO-160C for the Scan Head and RTCA/DO-160G for the Control Unit.
  • Electromagnetic compatibility in accordance with MIL-STD-461D for the Scan Head and RCA/DO-160G for the Control Unit.

IR/UV Line Scanner Infrared/Ultraviolet Line Scanner APPLICATION • Detection of highly reflective features on the sea surface such as oil spills and biogenic surface films • Highly resolved mapping of very thin and thick oil layers on the water surface • Basic sensor for automatic creation of thematic maps of the oil spill scene (automated scene analysis) • Imaging remote sensor for thermal mapping applications Passive remote sensing of marine pollution using the IR/UV Line Scanner IR/UV line scanners have been established as standard tools in airborne oil spill remote sensing. They are capable of simultaneously mapping the total extent of the oil spill (layer thickness > 0.01 µm) as well as areas of intermediate (2 to 70 µm) and large oil layer thickness (> 50 µm). OPTIMARE developed a ruggedized, lightweight and modular IR/UV Line Scanner for airborne maritime surveillance. OPTIMARE‘s IR/UV Line Scanner is characterized by a unique optical design, an excellent maintainability and a broad operating temperature range.
