NSK has developed a new long-life, water-resistant bearing grease, AQGRD R1, specifically designed for rolling mills. This grease aims to enhance the lifespan of bearings by preventing flaking and rust through improved lubrication and water resistance.

The AQGRD R1 grease is characterized by its yellow color, NLGI grade 2 consistency, and a worked penetration of 322. It uses mineral oil as the base oil with a lithium complex soap thickener. The dropping point is 216ºC, oil separation is 1.4%, oxidation stability is 30 kPa, and water washout is 59%. It has excellent corrosion preventive properties, rated #1 based on ASTM D1743.

Benefits and Technology
The new grease technology provides a thicker oil film and protective oxide film, which repels water and prevents direct contact between the roller and surface, even under insufficient lubrication conditions. This results in minimized premature flaking and rust, effectively doubling the bearing life compared to existing greases.

Test Results
Tests conducted under specific conditions (bearing HR32017XJ, room temperature, bearing temperature 60-70ºC, radius force 35.8kN, axle force 15.7kN, speed 1500 r/min) demonstrated that the new grease significantly outperforms existing greases in terms of life ratio and minimum oil thickness.

Grease for sealed type roller bearings What causes flaking and how can it be prevented? Flaking occurs when small pieces of bearing material are split off from the smooth surface of the raceway or rolling elements due to rolling fatigue, thereby causing areas with rough and coarse texture. Possible causes are due to poor lubrication, improper lubricant, entry of foreign debris and entry of water.
