Product catalog summary
Introduction
StrainMaster Portable systems utilize Digital Image Correlation (DIC) for non-contact, full-field measurement and characterization of materials, components, and structures. This technique uses advanced CCD and CMOS cameras to capture images of materials under load, allowing for the calculation of local surface displacement and strain maps.

Advantages Over Traditional Techniques
  • High data yield with multi-point information.
  • No pre-test gauge placement required.
  • Non-damaging to surfaces.
  • Identifies local hot spots, discontinuities, and cracks.
  • Operates in hostile environments.
  • Provides validation data for simulations and surface shape information.

Performance Specifications
  • Displacement precision of 0.01 pixels.
  • Global strain precision of 10 micro strain.
  • Local strain precision of 100 micro strain.
  • Compliance with ASTM E83-10a and ISO 9513 standards.

Surface Pattern Requirements
The technique requires a random, high-contrast speckle pattern, typically applied with aerosol paints, although natural patterns may suffice.

System Versatility
StrainMaster systems can be synchronized with any test machine and are suitable for various test types, including compression, flexure, impact, fatigue, multi-axis, cyclic, tension, and thermomechanical tests. They function effectively in challenging environments, such as high temperatures and reflective surfaces, using specialized filters and lighting.

Applications
  • High Temperature Testing: Utilizes high-temperature paints and hardware add-ons to measure displacement and strain in heated components.
  • Plastics and Rubbers: Capable of handling large strains (>1000%) typical in these materials.
  • Crack Initiation and Fracture: Identifies strain hot spots and crack propagation with sub-pixel accuracy.
  • Biomechanics: Useful in studying deformation in biomedical applications, such as false teeth and aneurysms.
  • Composites: Assists in characterizing materials for finite element models, including pre-damaged panels.
  • Metal Specimens: Equipped with polarizing filters to reduce specular reflection.

Software and Calibration
The StrainMaster DIC software offers intuitive control over data collection, processing, and reporting. Calibration is user-friendly, requiring no manufacturer intervention, and typically takes less than five minutes. The software supports multi-channel A/D recording, fast frame rates, and continuous live viewing.

Data Analysis and Export
Users can perform full-field displacement and strain calculations, select regions of interest, and choose from various display and calculation modes. The software allows for the extraction of virtual gauge plots and data export in multiple formats.

System Components
StrainMaster systems integrate advanced cameras and lighting, including LED lighting with polarizing filters, to ensure high-quality image capture and analysis.

Whole Surface Measurements StrainMaster systems are based around the technique known as Digital Image Correlation (DIC), which utilizes images taken using advanced CCD and CMOS Cameras of the material or component undergoing some sort of loading process. This is a non-contacting optical technique – as long as the surface is visible we are able to acquire images. Surface Pattern The optimum pattern for the technique is a random, rich in contrast, speckle pattern which is typically created with standard aerosol paints. In some cases the natural surface pattern may be suitable (e.g. concrete). By...

High Temperature Testing StrainMaster is applied to many different types of materials and components. It has the flexibility to be useful in many situations, even in challenging environments. DIC measurements of a hot (800°C) exhaust manifold - with filter (left) and without filter (right) Acknowledgement: images taken during a project with KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden) and Scania. With high temperature paints to pattern the surface, and through special hardware add-ons we are able to see through the infra-red glow from the hot component. Displacement and strain maps can be calculated...

Challenging environments are not restricted to high temperatures alone. It can refer to difficult optical access, or even samples contained in liquids such as saline solution for biomedical tissues. Analysis of implant-supported dental restorations (Courtesy of Dr Rodrigo Tiossi et al, Dental School of Ribeirao Preto, University of Sao Paulo, Brazil) An area where it is difficult to use strain gauges, and where the understanding of the material characteristics remains challenging is biomechanics. The example here shows the deformation of false teeth during loading which simulates chewing. Other...

::::Calibration Recording At the heart of the system the StrainMaster DIC software gives complete control and management over your data collection, processing, and reporting. The software is extremely intuitive with a logical data and menu structure. Like any device, the StrainMaster system must be calibrated for the test. This is not something that LaVision has to do though - there is no manufacturer system calibration required. You will be trained to calibrate the system; a process which typically takes less than 5 minutes when using our special calibration plates. Having focussed on the sample...
