It integrates advanced DIC algorithms with high-quality hardware, suitable for both industrial and academic use. The system is adaptable to various needs and can utilize natural material surfaces for precise data acquisition.
Applications
StrainMaster is versatile, applicable in tensile, compression, and bend testing, material characterization, high-temperature testing, crack detection, and fluid-structure interaction. It serves industries like aerospace, automotive, energy, biomedical, civil engineering, and arts conservation, providing insights into material behavior under diverse conditions.
System Features
Available as a complete turn-key solution or standalone software, StrainMaster offers comprehensive data management, camera integration, and synchronization with external signals. Users have full control over post-processing, with access to raw data. The software supports live gauge extensometer mode and includes add-ons for MATLAB® and export formats like ABAQUS® INP.
Technique
StrainMaster uses DIC to compute local displacements by tracking patterns in image subsets, employing a Least Squares Matching approach with higher-order spline interpolation for accurate displacement field calculations. In 3D stereoscopic systems, two cameras determine surface height and z-displacement, akin to human depth perception.
Software and Processing
Built on the DaVis platform, the StrainMaster software offers a user-friendly workflow with features like focus aids, 3D calibration, synchronized image acquisition, and flexible masking. It supports batch processing, non-linear filters, and smart masking, with data exportable in various formats, including MATLAB® and ABAQUS®.
Advanced Solutions
StrainMaster provides specialized solutions for high-speed, small-scale, and high-temperature DIC measurements, supporting dual-level calibration for multi-camera setups and fluid-structure interaction analysis, essential for understanding material behavior under dynamic, shock, or high-temperature conditions.
Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI)
LaVision's systems measure the interaction between fluid flow and surface deformation, crucial for understanding strain response under combined loading scenarios. Integration with an IR camera allows recording and correlating temperature and strain distributions.
Digital Volume Correlation (DVC)
DVC extends DIC to provide full 3D strain and displacement measurements, tracking internal patterns within materials for validating complex simulations and visualizing subsurface behavior, applicable in biomechanics, granular flow, and composite testing.
StrainMaster Portable System
Designed for flexibility and portability, the StrainMaster Portable system includes features like polarization filters to enhance data quality and various mounting systems for 2D and 3D measurements.
System Components
LaVision's systems integrate different cameras and light sources based on application needs, offering a range of CCD and CMOS cameras with varying pixel counts and frame rates.
Conclusion
LaVision provides comprehensive solutions for measuring and analyzing fluid-structure interactions and strain responses, adaptable to various research and testing requirements, offering high precision and flexibility.

StrainMaster-Advanced Digital Image Correlation Systems-3

Digital Image Correlation Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is a method to compute local displacements in a sequence of images showing some kind of specimen deformation. The images are discretized into small subsets of NxN pixels, and the algorithm tracks the pattern within each subset. Where the pattern matching is maximized (or the differences minimized), this represents the local displacement. Repeating this across the entire image for all subsets yields a full field map of data, which is similar to having thousands of virtual extensometers or strain gauges on the sample surface. Moreover, by...

DIC and DVC have been successfully applied to skin tissue, bone, teeth (see left) and implants. Biomechanical applications often require very small fields of view necessitating specialized optics. One such example is the study of Nitonol shape memory alloy which is used in endovascular stent graft systems produced by Vascutek Ltd. By using a StrainMaster system equipped with a stereo microscope it was possible to gain an understanding of the functional behaviour of small scale (< 0.5 mm diameter) Nitinol wire.
