Product catalog summary
Alloy Steel Quik Guide Summary
Nomenclature:
  • HR (Hot Roll): Original as rolled surface from steel mill, meeting ASTM A29 tolerances.
  • FGD (Hot Forged): Used for sizes over 10" where HR capabilities diminish.
  • CF (Cold Finish): Includes rough turned, cold drawn, turned & polished, meeting ASTM A108 tolerances.
  • RT (Rough Turn): Typically for HR sizes over 6" that can't be CD or T&P.
  • CD (Cold Drawn): HR drawn through a die, work hardens softer low carbon steels for improved machinability.
  • T&P (Turned & Polished): CNC high-speed precision turned & polished, considered seam & decarb free.
  • TGP (Turned, Ground & Polished): Turned & polished then centerless ground to final size.
  • ANN (Anneal): Softening HR by heating and furnace cooling to provide machinability.
  • N (Normalize): Heating to ~1650/1700F and air cooling to refine grain and homogenize microstructure.
  • T (Temper): Heating below critical temperatures to soften normalized or quench hardened material.
  • Q&T (Quench & Temper): Heating above critical temperatures, quenching in a liquid media, and tempering to desired hardness.
Quality Grades:
  • CQ: Commercial Quality
  • AQ: Aircraft Quality
  • BQ: Bearing Quality
  • EF: Electric Furnace Quality
Specifications and Properties:
  • Various grades and sizes are available, each with specific mechanical properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness.
  • Alloys are categorized into low, medium, and high carbon alloys, each with specific applications and properties.
  • Case hardening steels offer improved machinability and wear resistance.
  • Thru hardening steels are suitable for induction hardening and offer high strength and toughness.
Applications and Recommendations:
  • Alloys are suitable for critical applications requiring high wear resistance and toughness.
  • Specific treatments like annealing, normalizing, and quenching & tempering are recommended based on the desired mechanical properties.
  • For demanding applications, seam and decarb free alloys are preferred.
