Active inceptor systems

Product catalog summary
Introduction to Inceptor Systems
Inceptor systems are critical pilot controls used to maneuver aircraft, commonly known as "sticks." They include side sticks, center sticks, throttles, cyclics, and collectives. Traditionally, these controls are mechanically linked to aircraft surfaces and power controls. In fly-by-wire systems, inceptors transmit inputs to the flight control computer, which adjusts the aircraft's directional surfaces and power.

Active Inceptor Systems
Active inceptor systems provide tactile feedback to pilots through the inceptor, enhancing pilot awareness and control. This system electronically couples two inceptors, offering dual-pilot aircraft the benefits of tactile cueing without the weight and cost of mechanical linkages. BAE Systems is a leading provider of these systems, ensuring high reliability and integrity for both military and commercial applications.

Benefits of Active Inceptor Systems
  • Reduced through-life cost and mechanical complexity.
  • Improved pilot and co-pilot awareness through electrical linking.
  • Enhanced safety and performance with tactile cues.
  • Unrestricted views of displays and improved cockpit layout.
  • Programmable features for future growth and simplified control laws.
  • Lower system weight compared to conventional systems.

Technological Advantages
Active inceptors provide real-time force feedback, offering various pilot cues such as variable gradients and force breakouts. They allow for easy changes in forces, breakouts, and damping during flight, eliminating field maintenance. The system supports high bandwidth tactile cues and autopilot back-drive for visual cues.

Conclusion
Active inceptor systems represent the next step in commercial flight controls, offering significant improvements in handling, safety, and pilot experience. BAE Systems continues to lead in this technology, providing advanced solutions for modern aircraft.

Active inceptor systems-2

What are Inceptor Systems? Inceptors are the controls that pilots use to direct and maneuver the aircraft. They are flight critical. Commonly referred to as “sticks,” inceptors cover a variety of pilot controls on fixed- and rotary-wing platforms including side sticks, center sticks, throttles, cyclics, and collectives. In an active inceptor system, two inceptors can be electronically coupled as if they were mechanically linked. Dual-pilot aircraft can thus benefit from the additional feel and cueing capabilities without the weight and throughlife cost penalties of actual mechanical linkages....

Active inceptor systems-3

Active Inceptor Systems technology The next step in the evolution of commercial flight controls is the introduction of active pilot controls. These systems are already used in military aircraft, replacing traditional, passive pilot controls. Active inceptors provide force feedback directly into the pilot's hand, in real time. This force feedback, or tactile feedback, may take the form of various pilot cues — such as variable gradients, force breakouts, detents, ramps, gates, and soft stops — to warn of mode engagements or impending flight envelope limits. Benefits • Reduced through-life cost •...
